Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Communications Analyst and the overall guidance of the Country Director of UNDP, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • S/he assists with profiling UNDP programmes and projects;
  • S/he assists with the production of the UNDP communication products including newsletters, bulletins, pamphlets;
  • S/he assists with producing issues-based print stories for the website that communicate UNDP’s results in South Africa;
  • S/he assists with updating UNDP website content and profiles on social networks (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter) with information about project activities and events;
  • S/he assists with keeping an updated media and partners contact list;
  • S/he assists in creating a knowledge repository of communication-related aspects for the organization;
  • S/he performs other duties as required.

Furthermore, interns are encouraged to:

  • Increase their understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and South Africa’s National Development Plan;
  • Share their academic knowledge of communications for development with Country Office staff and other UN Agencies in South Africa;
  • Benefit from briefings and capacity-building activities organized by the national and regional office and other UN Agencies in South Africa to gain insight into the work of the United Nations and UNDP.
Competencies
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Good inter-personal skills;
  • Excellent computer literacy in standard software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Proficiency in the use of digital and social media platforms;
  • Good research and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member;
  • Sensitivity to political, cultural and national differences and adaptability to multicultural environments.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Studies in Communications and/ or Social Studies or related fields.
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

 

  • Relevant experience in similar potions, public relations, communications or journalism would be an asset.

Language:

  • Fluency in English.

Duration of Internship Assignment:

  • Internship assignments vary in length according to the academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNDP. Assignments normally last a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of six months.
  • An internship may exceptionally be approved for a maximum total duration of nine months if the intern can demonstrate it will grant him/her an educational credit for a course.

Internship Conditions:

A few key points regarding internships with UNDP:?

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses  are the responsibility of  the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the intern, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence through private sources.
  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. UNDP will not reimburse the medical insurance of the intern. Any costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;

Subsequent Employment:

  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
