History
Times Media Group was previously named Johnnic Communications. The company name became Avusa in 2007 to prevent misperception between Johnnic Communications and Johnnic Holdings. It was named Avusa because the word means, ‘to rouse feelings, to revive and evoke action’, which is in line with the company objectives. In 2012 Avusa was renamed Times Media Group after the company was bought by a section of Mvelaphanda Group. It was then listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Although the company now only has vested interests in print media and Gallo Record Company, it previously owned two retailers, Nu Metro Cinema and Exclusive Books. Both companies continue to thrive – long after they were sold.
