Introduction to Correctional Services Learnership
Correctional Services Learnership or Correction Services Learnership is a learnership programme offered by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Republic of South Africa (RSA). The DCS is seeking for people from any backgrounds, interests and relevant qualifications to join in Correctional Services Learnership. This programme will give learners equal NQF Level 4 and receive Further Education and Training (FET) Certificate. Learners/students will be trained in the field of rehabilitation of offenders by the Corrections and human development in secure and humane custody under the supervision of community-based correctional. The learnership intends to contribute to improving the least of South Africans skills. The Correctional Services Learnership is based on a legal agreement between the employer, learner and service provider.

The FET Certificate in Correctional Services Learnership uses English language as a main language during the learnership programme. The other advantages, learners will improve their skills, knowledge and working experience in the The opportunity to acquire skills, knowledge and workplace experience in the area of corrections. In addition, this programme also gives learners a monthly stipend of over R3500.00 for 12 months.
Requirements of Correctional Services Learnership
Basic requirements
To apply Correctional Services Learnership, candidates must be a South African who are holding a Grade 12/Standards 10. If not, you must have completed the National Certificate in Vocational Studies (NQF Level 4). Or if not too, you must have completed a FET Certificate (NQF Level 4). If you have more higher qualifications, you also can participate in this programme, but it’s not be affected for your stipend paid or for future remuneration..
General requirements
Candidates must be South Africans who between 23-35 years old, have good character, are willing to allow their fingerprints to be taken to background check ups, are law abiding citizens without any criminal records, are willing to follow the interviews and selection process, are willing to disclose the information and allow DCS to review the qualifications, and are willing to take a part in psychometric testing.
Learnership Composition
This learnership consists of about 30% of theory and approximately 70% workplace learning.
Theory
About 30% of learning theory is inclusive of the firearms, physical training and self-defense in the appropriate colleges that accredited by The DCS. Free accommodation meals, training materials, and uniforms (wearing sweatpants and field) will be provided during this training phase. Compulsory theoretical training, learners need to be housed full-time at the Training College.
Working Practice
Approximately 70% work-based learning, will be held in Correctional and Social Reintegration Centres. During this phase, learners will continue to receive a stipend, accommodation, meals and transportation. But to be noted there is no pension fund, housing allowances/benefits, provisions for risks, medical aid. The learners should be considered as a competent after the successful completion of the theory learning phase and working learning phase, the final presentation of the Portfolio of Evidence (POE) and successfully in external review by SASSETA. Any deviation from the learnership agreement during the 12 months will be processed by the DCS, in accordance with sections 17 and 18 of the Skills Development Act, 97 of 1998. After the successful completion of this learnership candidates will receive FET Certificate in Correctional Services (equal NQF Level 4). However, the DCS does not guarantee any permanent jobs.
Correctional Services Learnership Application
To apply Correctional Services Learnership, candidates must download Correctional Services Learnership Application Form and complete in your own handwriting. Quoting the learnership application which you are applying for (for example KZN Region: Durban Ref: E22/2020). Ensure that candidates do not allowed to leave any empty spaces and must be signed by your own-hands (application form do not allowed to be signed by agent). Include certified copies of your qualification documents and ID that are not older than 3 months.
